Terms of use for the dormitory network

Du findest die deutsche Fassung hier!

In addition to the common rules of the computer center of the Saarland university the following rules apply:

Easy Access

0. Every habitant can connect any computer to the network without prior registration, assuming it is configured to use DHCP for network configuration. If the browser is configured to use automatic proxy detection, those computers can then be used to surf the web. This especially facilitates the preparation to comply to rules 1 to 3.

Security rules

1. The operating system needs to be kept up to date. (e.g. automatic Windows Update)

2. Some antivirus software needs to be installed. It has to be updated at least every second day. (We recomment the free AVIRA.)

3. Some firewall must be active. (Windows' integrated firewall suffices.)

Traffic rules

4. The usage of any kind of peer-to-peer/filesharing software inside the dormitory is prohibited. This includes Kazaa, Gnutella, eMule, Azurus, Bittorrent, Bearshare as well as peer-to-peer based internet TV software!

5. The usage of the VPN system of the computer center of the university is both prohibited and technically impossible. If there is a concrete requirement, you may request clearance with the network tutors.

6. Every user with an own IP address can check his current traffic on the dormitory's homepage. Every user himself is responsible to adhere to the respecitve limits (15 000 MB as of March 2009). In order to allow exceeding the limit by a small amount in one month, the following rules are in effect: One month’s traffic must not exceed 20 000 MB, and the sum of the traffic of the current and the previous month must not exceed 30 000 MB. If you exceed one of these limits, your internet connection will be deactivated at least for the rest of the month.

Access rules

8. Accessing computers inside the dormitory by computers outside the dormitory network is generally impossible. The following exceptions apply:
8a. Inside the VPN of the computer center, every computer inside the dormitory can be accessed on ports 22 (SSH) und Port 3389 (RDP).
8b. With special reason, special port forwardings for individual users can be set up on the dormitory server (www.wohnheim-guckelsberg.de, 134.96.82.252) to ports of that user's computer. Special reason assumed those can be requested from the network tutors. These forwardings can be reached from anywhere without exceptions.

Every habitant may file an application for his own IP. That will be processed by the network tutors after verification of rules 1-3. Clearence cannot take place prior to that verification.
